Cork & Canvas

Grapes Gone Wild

Co-owner of Cork & Canvas Mick Ter Haar says it straight. “Its just grape juice” really, really yummy grape juice...his low brow and approachable way of describing wine.

Straight but not necessarily simple. That’s because while the offerings at Highland Park’s latest wine shop are streamlined and focused there’s more here than meets the eye.

You see, Sonia and Mick Ter Haar, the husband and wife team behind this art and wine venture have combined their respective passions to bring the North Shore its labor of love in the Second Street retail space (a few store fronts south of Michael’s Hot Dogs). Sonia’s photography is on display and other local artists also exhibit their works in this oak scented setting.

What appealed to me most was hearing about how and why Cork and Canvas is different from the other wine spots like Binny’s, Wine Discount or even Trader Joe’s known for their extreme bargains.

And that’s really the point. Cork and Canvas specializes in the more boutique wines and small production. Making it more about less is more, rather than more is what matters. To keep inventory at its finest, Mick hand selects each wine. But, don’t just think that because Mick is precious with his choices doesn’t mean he doesn’t share. In fact, just the opposite is true. Mick’s loooooves to chat about the grape and willingly opens up about the details, craftsmanship and how it might best be enjoyed.

In addition to the wine and art, Cork & Canvas also carries wine accessories and stay tuned -- soon wine classes and tastings are coming.

To get things rolling make sure you stop in on Sunday, November 4th for their Grand Opening.
