The Three Things You’d Hate To Ask Your Hairdresser

Some relationships are intimate from the very start.
I know you’re hip to what I’m referring about… if not, rewind to last your visit with your Gynecologist, oral surgeon, or hairdresser.

Your hairdresser is not just your hair dresser – he or she is your entire look specialist and personal vanity resource. Face it, your hairdresser is apt to notice and truthfully comment on your new scarf, lipstick color, skin texture and weight. But as tight as your relationship with your hairdresser may be, chances are the following questions aren’t ones you risk asking, so we did and thanks to Tony Gordon of videoGordon Salon & Spas -- we got the Insider answers:

Q: What do you do if you hate your haircut or even the way your hair looks when you leave the salon?

Tony’s Answer
“Don’t worry. We have re-do customer satisfaction policy. Here’s what you do. When the appointment is over leave the salon, go home and evaluate whether it was the cut or the styling. Give it a day or so but no longer than a week and then call the salon. Please, no need to feel shy, embarrassed or nervous… to tell us honestly and politely. Explain your situation to the front desk, they’ll speak to your hairdresser on your behalf and re-book the appointment no cost. At Gordon this thankfully hardly ever happens if at all. We guarantee our work 100% and if you’re not happy we will make sure you are.”

Q: Should you tip the owner of the salon?

Tony’s Answer:
“Yes. The practice of not tipping the salon owner may have come from the days when the business was almost all cash-based. These days more than 95% of the transactions are made with credit cards. Tipping the Salon owner is no longer something you’re not supposed to do. I would say it’s universally considered just fine.”

Q. What is the down and dirty, rule of thumb on tipping?

Tony’s Answer:
“The best way to figure the tip is to tip like you would in a restaurant. If the service is standard you would tip 10%, if it was really solid 15% is appropriate, if it was excellent go for 20%. If there is an assistant working with your hairdresser it’s recommended that you make sure you tip kindly – the amount is really us to you. Of course you’ll want to tip a few dollars for the person who washed and conditioned your hair before you ooohhed and aaahhed during the head massage”
