Spring Break is over.
Thankfully, I survived the week with two kids home, little structure, only a few friends around, and lots of planning. Trust me when I tell you I did not leave these “vacation days” to chance. Instead, I did my darndest and scour my resources, but in the end, even I was feeling uninspired with usual options of bowling or B-Movie matinee. Against my better judgment I bought tickets to see the Chicago Arena Football team – the Chicago Rush play the Atlanta Rattlers.
Get this, it turned out to be the unexpected “high” of the week. And as crazy as sounds, it involved bad (I mean really bad) food, lots of noise and Football. Of all the sports out there… I just don’t get football. The cold, the endless games that kill our weekends and the noise. No thank you. But, obviously I was missing something. And now I know what -- Arena Football.
I learned that Arena Football has been around for a while. 1981, to be exact and conceptualized on the back of a manila envelope by Jim Foster who was at the time attending an indoor soccer game. Today it’s the fastest growing sport in the world (according to FunTrivia.com).
Perhaps, here’s why. Constant entertainment. Going to a Bull’s Game (which we also did last week) made this live sporting event look like ho-hum in comparison to what they do at the Allstate Arena to support The Chicago Rush. It was non-stop games with audience participation; super charged cheerleading, dance music and decent swag. The fans ate it up and those of us who never dreamed of becoming a fan almost willingly signed up.
The best part – Arena Football while not “new” is still young. And to some degree that means there are no big stars (yet) or super high priced tickets. My kids were able to actually hang with some of the players at their dugout and in the thrill rather than at it. When my son asked for a football one of the opposing team players took off his sweat-soaked receiving gloves and hurled them over the wall. His day was made – but the ride home was with the windows open.
