The Art of The Deal

Shopping is not a spectator sport...unless your personal stylist makes house calls. The shopping process means that you have to know where to go to find what you’re looking for.

While I’m certainly no retail expert, I have noticed that there seem to be two distinct breeds of shoppers – those who could care less about price and shop wherever they want and those who are downright dedicated and driven by thrill of the deal. For those in this camp the mission is to feel and be seen as a smart shopper both by oneself and by others.

If deals are a key motivator for you – the easiest place to find them on the North Shore is in Northbrook at either Nordstrom Rack or Loehmans. With the fall shopping season in full swing I was curious to find out which items were being pushed and how far my hard working dollar could go.

My mother always said that shopping is hard work she wasn’t kidding. Even if your stay at Nordstroms or Loehmans is in actual time short – the sourcing and examining is anything but relaxing. The hunt starts from the minute you walk in – and what’s really amazing is that the prize can change at any minute. Here’s what I mean...today I went into “the Rack” with short wool shorts on the brain... I had to have them. I even imagined what I would wear them with and where I might where them to. But, after pushing hangers for a few racks I gave up. I decided my chances of finding what I was looking for were as slim as winning Publisher’s Clearing House. So what... time move onto another area to land a good score.

En route to the shoes I couldn’t help but pass the sea of outerwear. It was here that I knew my deal of day was waiting. Now, we’re talking jackets, coats, puffers, bombers, vests, trench coats, leather, pleather and suede. Every single shape and size. I caught a rush knowing this would end up being an awesome score… green/gray suede, 3/4 length pea coat style, fully lined, with style and function for a steal. Starting price $388, now $99 with another 40%. Wow, this I couldn’t pass up!

One last important tip – when hitting Nordstrom or Loehmans do what you can to go during off peak hours. This will help to alleviate the additional “work” of working around the crowds and aggressive deal seekers.
