North Shore Halloween Costume Hits for 2009

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, which is JUST SO COOL if it happens to be one of your favorite holidays, like it is mine. Whether you’re dressing just yourself or dressing the whole brood, creativity is key. You may have the budget to go all out, or you may pride yourself on attic-raiding and thrift- store-shopping your way to winning the best costume prize. Our Insiders have researched some of the tricks and trends for 2009.

The experts at Halloweencostumes4u.com can’t say enough about the effect of pop culture – especially TV shows and movies – on what’s hip for Halloween. They declare a Star Trek resurgence surrounding the slated 2009 release of a new prequel in the hands of JJ Abrams, famous for hit TV shows Lost and Fringe. You’ll see both new costumes created based on the movie, and classics that have been brought back. “Say what you will about star trek fans being geeky or whatever, but with JJ Abrams as the mastermind behind the new Star Trek movie it's sure to have mass appeal.”

More Top picks by Halloweencostumes4u.com:

  • Characters from Watchmen for both teens and adults
  • Elvis has re-entered the building! This time around for men, children AND women!
  • Everything Star Wars: Clone Trooper for young boys, baby Yoda for parents dressing their little one, Slave Leia for the teen ladies, and new Jedi X-wing fighters for all ages
  • Retro sweeties like Strawberry Shortcake and Hello Kitty

With the unfortunate premature demises of 80s icons Farrah and Michael Jackson, expect to see that decade back with a vengeance. Wigs will be big (the bigger the better!) and your local thrift store could be your best and cheapest resource for turning back the clock. Warm up the curling iron now and get out your old albums!

Fairytales never go out of style, comments Mary McCarthy on suite101.com. “Every girl had a favorite fairytale, and there are both traditional and sexy- version costumes of Little Bo Peep, Alice in Wonderland, Queen of Hearts, Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and other Disney Princesses, and of course witches in many varieties and new styles.”

Fairytale maidens can be one of the best do-it-yourself costumes. No two queens or witches look alike, so get creative and design your attire with clothing and objects that you have as opposed to buying a fancy costume.

With the popularity of the Twilight series and movie, and the recent TV show Vampire Diaries (Think 90210 with fangs), our Insiders predict you’ll see a veritable red sea of hottie male and female vampires. Of course, we’re not talking Bram Stoker’s walking dead, old-guy Dracula, rather designer jeans clad, lots of leather and tousled coffin-head hair vampires.

So, as you can see, ghouls and goblins, your options for a fabulous, festive Halloween party are endless! Maybe it’s time to you let your inner rockstar, superhero or bloodsucker party like it’s 1989.
