I thought I was in good shape until I did this interview. It seems that all the time, energy and effort – while not wasted, has not been used nearly as efficiently as I thought. The science of working out seems to change as often as the latest ipod. One day cardio is the way to go for weight loss, then its weights, then its Spinning, Yoga, Pilates, Zumba – and so on. I can not keep track. Walking is my perfect speed.
Bill Moss, the owner of Running Right in Highland Park sent me to the Poliquin Performance Center in Northfield. Tucked away, but conveniently located off of Frontage Road the Poliquin Performance Center is not a muscle gym or health club. When I went to interview Mike Bystol at the Poliquin Performance Center in Northfield I never, I repeat, NEVER thought I would be pulling up my shirt having my belly fat measured. But in the name of online journalism and the NorthShore obsession with weight I complied.

You see, I thought I was fit. I thought I was even lean and mean. For goodness sakes I haven’t had a Big Mac in over 25 years NO LIE... and stay away from all the obvious evils. Working out is even a regular part of my life. But when I was evaluated at Poliquin I learned from their state-of-the-art methodologies why and how I was not at my peak. Contrary to popular belief…my extra fat has nothing to do with eating or exercising. My excess has little to do with genetics either.

I was shocked – totally stunned. What I learned at Poliquin is that my poor body fat score is because I am a chronic night owl. I never go to bed early enough…or get enough rest. Like Mike explained…my body responds like I am being chased like a lion – and holds onto the fat because I am under stress. His prescription – get into bed before 10 and wake up earlier to do my work.
The later I am up the less time my body has to recover and the less chance I have to stay at my optimum level. Mike even gave me permission to take more naps – who’d have thunk?
With that said I have been trying to unwind at a more reasonable hour – but old habits die-hard and last night I saw 1am.
