HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT TIE

As the owner of Robert Vance Ltd, I’ve had the opportunity to assist thousands of men select the perfect tie for their suit, sport coat or shirt.

While “Office Casual” has become the standard attire in the workplace, nothing says professional or put together better than a man in a good suit and tie.

Most men want the help and many admittedly need it.

Experience is a great teacher. I’ve found selecting the right tie is an art not a science. So after 40 years of experience here are three important tips to help you select the right tie from your collection, or if you’re in the market for something new and can’t make it to the store.

1. Complimentary Colors
Select ties that are in the same color group as the coat and shirt. Earth tones with earth tones, brights with brights, pastels with pastels. Black ties may be considered a neutral and go with most combinations.

2. Contrast the Patterns
Select ties that are of a different size that the pattern of the shirt. Large patterns or striped ties with small stripes on the shirt. Avoid matching striped or plaid shirts, ties and suits.

3. Balance Your Selections
Create variety in your tie wardrobe.
Mix in stripes, paisleys and neats.
