I only wish that when learning the guitar, my practice sessions included perfecting We Can Work It Out or The Kids Are Alright. I do remember masking my enjoyment of mastering “Mandy” because what kid could admit to honoring Barry Manilow. Sadly, that was about as popular as the music was when I first learned.

A few years back I saw Jack Black’s movie “School Of Rock” and while no masterpiece, I secretly yearned to go back in time and let my raw desire to be a rock star emerge.

This burning desire lives on, and is miraculously being satisfied right here on the North Shore, and in Highwood to be exact.

On a rainy Sunday I recently hung out at the Paul Green School of Rock while the students ranging in ages were there for hours rehearsing for an upcoming Beatles concert. It was organized chaos. With little supervision and impassioned play these kids demonstrated their commitment to the usual rigors of reading music and re-dos in an almost suspicious way.

Being awe-struck by the cool garage-band look and feel, I was dying to understand what The School Of Rock put in their secret sauce – and why the kids learn and love it so much here. And this is what the guys had to say.

But, being Laurie Partridge fan I couldn’t leave until I met with Rose, a killer drummer who making her mark with her beat. In her calm and cool manner she made multi-tasking look passionate but effortless. Along with her friend and vocalist, Samantha, these young starlets set me straight and revealed that Fergie and Kanye West don’t appeal to their taste in music. They prefer Pink Floyd because is “so emotional”

The final word …Want your kid to learn music? Love learning it? Practicing it? And, having a total blast with other kids who share their palpable mission to play and perform at real concerts? Call School of Rock today.

Oh, adults don’t be shy, it’s not too late for your rock star fantasies to come true too. Classes are offered for your age too – but fill up fast!
