Boy can I relate! You see, aside from going to the dentist, dealing with the nitty gritty details of managing finances is one life’s biggest drags. As unprofessional as it may sound – until recently, I’ve never had a “system”, a discipline, or for that matter much desire to deal with the numbers reality of life.

So, when I was introduced to Patty Kaplan owner of StarWerks I knew that my time had come. From day one, I could see she got it, right away. That’s because during Patty’s 25+ years in business and finance, she has developed lean and mean strategies to help you with you keeping your finances in good health to further encourage healthy wealth.

I had to ask Patty, why are so many small to medium sized business owners resistant to hiring someone on the outside – insisting on doing it themselves? For so many of us it’s the willingness to let go and turn the responsibility over to someone else, or face the often seemingly large amount of work that needs to be done to get things in order. It’s easy to procrastinate but the downside is actually worse. Thankfully working with Patty is an empowering experience so now that I am on track, I miraculously am motivated to stay that way.

To get you started Patty’s first three tips to get you financially on course are:

  1. File it away – and file it under the name of what you call it “the gas company” rather than People’s Energy
  2. When you enter an expense onto your spread sheet or in Quick Books mark your paper copy with an E – for Entered. Now you’ll never have to wonder if that expense has been accounted for!
  3. Face it – whether it’s big or small get to the bottom of any financial discrepancy or question. As Patty reminds me – the answer is the answer so get down to it and then move to resolve it.

With it being January, Patty also provided us with some quick and easy tips to get ready for filing your taxes.

  1. Start a folder and collect your end of the year statements.
  2. In a separate folder collect all your receipts
  3. Get started NOW …don’t wait, no kidding the sooner you file the sooner you can get your refund back!
