Sunset Foods Local Flavor

Insider Scoop:
Check out these grocery store brands started
by North Shore locals...

Brought to you by Sunset Foods, this year celebrating their 70th Anniversary

Let’s go all the way back to 1937. Funny man Bill Cosby was born, the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge finally opened, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs electrified kids across America, and yes Sunset Foods opened to the public.

This year is the infamous’ Sunset Foods’ 70th anniversary. And to help celebrate with everybody’s favorite grocery store, Sunset has shown NorthShoreInsider.com some of the best locally produced products that have made it all the way into its exclusive aisles.

From a fine dining Italian restaurant to a local forest preserve, the North Shore has really produced some quality products for our taste pallet. Thadeus (TJ) Tazzioli, Sunset’s Marketing Director gave us the skinny on these local jewels and even served up some cooking ideas too.

5 AMAZING locally produced products that you must purchase at your next grocery store visit to Sunset!!!

First, do not miss Kim and Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels located in the frozen food section. These incredible pretzels tasted like a heaven and come in several out of this world flavors like Sourdough Parmesan and Apple Cinnamon. I just tried the plain old original style and found there to be nothing plain or ordinary about it. Inside it was was warm with a melt in your mouth affect, while the exterior provided a nice crisp and crunch. I can easily imagine north shore kids coming home after a long day – a slight rumbling in their stomachs and immediately pull out these from your freezer for the perfect afternoon snack.

The Heller Honey worked as an amazing dipping sauce for these pretzels. The freshness was extremely apparent as it is produced at a nature center in Highland Park. Heller even features tours that show how they extract the honey. You can taste it yourself and get a free sample before splurging on the whole bottle.

The sauce from Hole in the Wall in Northbrook is amazing. And what’s really impressive is the same fresh off the stove taste really carries over to the packaged version. The marinara sauce was extremely rich and not too chunky, a perfect complement to pasta, chicken, or even veggies.

For any grilling occasion you have to try Char Crust which comes straight from the legendary steakhouse – Al Farber’s – in Chicago. If it was used on the highest of quality prime steaks at the restaurant, Sunset’s own steaks, chicken breasts or pork chops will certainly benefit from this topper. TJ swears by this stuff!

Lastly T.J. introduced me to was the fresh corn grown Didier Farms in Buffalo Grove. I never knew that farms still existed in this area, let alone that grew ‘grocery store brand’ quality harvests.

I was blown away to learn about how many brands are from the northern suburbs of Chicago. So next time you stop by any one of Sunset’s four locations, be sure to pick up these local favorites to not only satisfy your stomach, but also contribute to these wonderful.
