They’re Here! They’re Here!

Thursday, September 27th, 2007 by Kelly

I can’t believe I’m going to utter these words: “The View” actually had some worthwhile information this morning.

Mallomars are here. Thanks for letting me know, Whoopi.

I kid you not - within an hour of this news, I was walking into Northbrook’s Sunset Foods to buy a couple of boxes. What is it about a seasonal prodcut that makes you think it’s OK to scarf down? Like it won’t hurt your diet to eat a box by yourself, because after all, you won’t be able to buy them after the holidays?

Ah, sweet denial.

Mallomars are divine. Chocolate, marshmallow, graham cracker…a delectable combination. I’d like to say they bring back childhood memories, but alas, I never lived in a Mallomar market until now. I almost feel robbed. They do, however, bring a smile to my husband’s face, which is always nice.

And now these cookie-like treats are in my house. Along with a few other goodies I can only find at Sunset Foods, like Wildfire Steak Sauce. Tho’ I wouldn’t recommend it in combination with a Mallomar.

You can find Mallomars at local Sunset Foods for just over $4 a box. Have fun!

Yes, I Was Sleeping

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007 by Kelly

Am I the only stay-at-home mom who feels guilty because they fall back asleep when their kids leave for school? I often catch myself explaining away such “lazy” behavior…

“I’ve only been sleeping four hours a night lately. I was folding laundry at midnight because I spent the afternoon working on the computer. I had to get the garbage together last night so it would be ready to roll out at 6 a.m. this morning. I spent the afternoon digging out the fall decor. I made the mistake of going to Costco at 11:45 when the entire community was lined up for lunch made out of the end-cap sample station fare.”

And so on and so on.

Listen, people. “Stay-at-home moms” is not the equivalent of “Don’t do anything to contribute to society moms.” Maybe I’m just writing this out loud so I can feel better. In any case, yes - I went back to sleep this morning! For all the modern day conveniences we have on the North Shore - concierge services, cleaning staff, Peapod and Oberweis, I have chosen the martyrdom path and do it all by myself, in addition to well,…actual work I do from home. And I know I am not alone.

I have found myself abandoning the title of “stay at home” in conversation and when completing forms that require mention of my employment status. More and more, I refer to myself as self employed. Which is no lie - that, I am. But at the same time, I almost feel like I am betraying what is so central to my core - that my primary job is that of “Mom.” It’s my favorite work title. So why feel guilty or even - gulp - embarrassed to shun it in favor of sounding more professional?

I am Mom, hear me roar. Gotta run - need to get that nap in.

Weekend Quick Picks

Friday, September 21st, 2007 by Kelly

I just found out about a way cool Seuss event this weekend, in collaboration with Amdur Gallery’s related exhibit through the end of the month: Breakfast!

Come out to The Glen and have some Green Eggs and Ham while you listen to a few Dr. Seuss tales – you’ll even have the opportunity to create some art of your own! It’s at:

Amdur Gallery of Contemporary Art
2017 Tower Drive
Sunday, September 23rd & Saturday, September 29th
11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Call 847-998-0777 for more informaiton.

I got a chance to browse the exhibit the other day, and it really is intriguing, in that you get to see so much more that he did in addition to the illustrations we already know and love. And I always think it’s fun to be within a breath of a $40,000 Seuss sculpture.

And consider this – more often than not, exhibits like these have an admission charge attached. The exhibit itself is FREE. Check it out!
