“Mom, I’m Bored!”

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008 by Kelly

It seems amazing anyone would speak those words after all the work you’ve put into the wonderment that surrounds Christmas and Hannukah, but alas, some children’s holiday high just doesn’t last that long. Need something to fill the hours on the 26th? Head to Splash Landings at the Glenview Park District’s main location for open swim! The economy may have forced you to cut the vacation to Cabo, but it doesn’t mean the kids have to forgo their water wings!

Calling All Harry Shearer Fans!

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008 by Kelly

I’m so glad I had the radio on in the car today — otherwise I would have missed an ad for S.P.A.C.E. – the Society for the Preservation of Arts and Culture in Evanston. I hopped online when I got home and discovered what appears to be a very cool joint! Open to all ages, S.P.A.C.E. offers a wide variety of shows, sure to appeal to just about everyone. In fact, coming up this Thursday? It’s the Harry Shearer and Judith Owen Holiday Sing-A-Long! Tix are $40 and the show starts at 8 p.m. Harry and wife Judith will entertain one and all with their traditional and not-so-much traditional holiday faves, and the audience gets to join in!

Here’s the info:

Don’t Miss “Dear Zachary”

Monday, December 8th, 2008 by Kelly

I rarely come to hear to post media reviews, but I feel compelled to tell one and all: don’t Miss “Dear Zachary…A Letter To A Son About His Father.” I was able to DVR it and catch up with it this morning, and now that I’ve fully composed myself, I’m able to write about it.

It’s a documentary chronicling the life of a 28-year-old man through the words of the friends and family that love him. And I use the present tense, for despite the obvious –presented to the audience just minutes into the film — it’s clear that those touched by him will never forget him. There are a few very shocking twists and turns during the film, so I can’t say much more about it, other than to say, watch it with a box of tissue. Even if you NEVER cry at movies. If you’re having a pity party for yourself, watch this and realize there are worse things in life, and if the Bagbys can endure what they must, so can you. It’s simply that amazing.

Catch it on MSNBC this sunday (the 14th) at 4 p.m., or when it makes a return visit to the Gene Siskel Film Center downtown on January 30.
