The closer I get to 40, the further I get from my “breeding” stage - I remember being between pregnancies, wistfully walking past maternity clothing boutiques, keeping an eye on what looked cute for “down the road.” Now? Don’t even show me something in an empire waist. Just seeing it will bring on pseudo Braxton Hicks.

Back then, the chic-est place to shop was “Pea in the Pod.” There was no maternity option at the Gap. Motherhood Maternity had cornered the market. A nation of pregnant women waddled about, looking pretty much the same, swapping advice on wear to get the best stretch-panel jeans. Gah.

But just when I think I’m done with maternity boutiques, along comes one that also caters to hipster moms who want to hold onto some style not just during pregnancy, but after the baby arrives as well. So, I have to ask, are you a Hot Mama?

This? What a cool store. I can’t tell you much about the maternity styles - again, that strange aversion kicks in – but the styles for us non-pregnant types are far out. The Glen Town Center location is the first for the minnesota-based Tamkes, who began their endeavor of bringing glam back to the mommy set in 2004. Me? I’m kind of digging on the gauzy peace, love and Elmo over-a-tee-shirt. And if you want a variety of denim, this is THE place.

It’s very kid-friendly, with an occasional piece of candy making it’s way to your kid’s mouth. And because it’s in the heart of the Town Center, you can always swing by pre- or post-Kohl’s Children’s Museum visits. Check it out!
