Blog O’ Shame, Blog O’ Fame

July 25th, 2008 by Kelly

I’d like to think that my better angels had a stronger hold on my soul than the evil minions that whisper in my ear all day long. That the almightly influence of Oprah and her “Gratitude Journal” could purge my inner crabby butt and help me view the world in a more peaceful light.

Alas, no. The only medicine that works for me is just to vent. And vent some more. And grab a glass of wine and continue to crab. I love that line from Steel Magnolias - “If you can’t think of something nice to say, come sit next to me!” So when the spirit moves me, hopefully once a week, I’m going to post my Blog O’ Shame, Blog O’ Fame - see if you end up in it!

This week’s “Shame On You!” crowd: Let’s start with the ahem…driver of a car yesterday doing 45 miles per hour behind me on Lehigh in Glenview, through a 25 mph zone. Dude - I have my three kids in the back of the minivan, I’m already going 5 over, and you STILL have to ride my butt and then illegally pass me because you feel the need for speed? Yeah, 25 mph sucks, but I’m not about to risk a ticket so you can get to the Dairy Bar 30 seconds faster. And just where the heck is a police car when crap like that happens? Speaking of cars, I’m calling out every North Shore denizen who thinks the left turn arrow is merely a guideline and not an actual law. If the arrow is red, DO NOT TURN IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC.

Now for my personal Hall of Famers for the week: The staff at Glenview Public Library that are ever so patient with my oldest son and his endless list of CDs he’s interested in locating. He’s a shy kid and hesitant when it comes to the use of technology on his own, so to watch as he quietly approaches a staff member and asks for help is on a personal level, a big deal. And the fact that people are so willing to engage him and help is even a bigger deal.

Also? The Willow Hill Golf Academy in Northbrook - my boys just wrapped up a five-day morning camp at Willow Hill, and had a spectacular time. Judgment’s out on whether or not their games improved, but the staff was excited to see my kids every day and when I picked them up, they were eating and chatting it up in the lounge with the kids right up until the end. Kudos!
