Evanston Mulls Affordable Housing
January 28th, 2008 by JakeThe Evanston City Council will be voting today on several issues, including the construction of affordable condominiums.
The city council is scheduled to vote on several important issues that could affect the local real estate market. The Lakefront Master Plan will be one of the issues discussed during today’s meeting. The plan covers the development of lakefront land, including improvements to the bike paths.
Another issue to be discussed by city officials is the expansion of the TIF district for West Evanston. The proposed increase to $40 million in the TIF budget could lead to further development around the neighborhood.
However, perhaps the most important issue for local residents is the possible development of 3 condominiums that would be sold for $185,000, more than $100,000 below the market value. The condominiums are located at 241 Callan Ave. The city has already requested a grant of $300,000, but has only been given the go ahead for $250,000 from the Housing Commission.
Evanston is facing a shortage of affordable housing, which is pushing many low income residents out of the downtown area. The city council is working to provide opportunities for long-time residents to stay in the neighborhood by providing affordable North Shore Chicago Condos.
