If my friends back in Michigan could see me now, they’d chuckle. A self-confessed mall rat, I’m living the dream – I actually live in a mall. Actually, it’s a “retail development.” It just sounds nicer. It’s not as if my back door faces a Spencer’s Gifts.

No, this “retail development” is the Glen Town Center. And it’s vastly different from my two-story-traditional-home-with-big-backyard-neighborhood. But I love it. And this morning, I thought I’d give a shout out to my favorite department store, Von Maur.

It’s not the largest department store around, but it’s definitely the best when it comes to customer service. Here’s why: each and every store employee I have encountered has been extremely pleasant and eager to help me with whatever I need. Shopping for perfume one day, the sales clerk provided my daughter Chloe with her very own bag of perfume - samples that she relishes when she wants to smell pretty. When I needed a pair of Merrells for Chloe and they didn’t have her size, they hopped on the phone, got them there two days later and had already applied a fresh coat of suede protectant so they were good to go.

Buying a gift? Take it to Customer Service where they’ll wrap it for free. Do you need to send it? Von Maur will ship it for free, provided there is not another Von Maur within a certain distance of your shipping destination. There are signs everywhere throughout the store asking you to touch the merchandise, which believe you me, takes some of the stress out of shopping when you’ve got kids in tow.

Now, for me, there’s an added convenience of being literally two minutes from my back door. But for those who have to drive, there’s ample parking surrounding the store, and ramps that lead right up to the door, meaning you can park and walk right in.

If you haven’t made it out to the Glen yet, Von Maur is well worth the trip. And don’t forget to check out the sales racks - some of the best around!

Von Maur is open seven days a week, at 1960 Tower Drive in Glenview. Turn right onto Patriot Drive off of Lake Ave., or left off of Willow onto Patriot.
