Jazz On The Cheap
March 16th, 2008 by KellyIf you’ve never taken advantage of some of the top-notch entertainment Northwestern University has to offer, you are MISSING OUT.
Seriously – for just $22, the five of us in our family were able to enjoy about an hour-and-a-half of some great, great jazz music from the NU Jazz Sextet and Jazz Ensemble Saturday night at Pick-Staiger Hall. We were able to park adjacent to the building, walk right up and get tix, and sit anywhere we wanted in the venue, which was really, embarrassingly two-thirds empty for the quality of music provided. People need to get out and enjoy the music!
I was worried the kids could be a nuisance - that the concert would be a bit o the uppity side. It was a 7:30 show after all, and there wasn’t popcorn, Dan Zane or Justin Roberts anywhere around. I was worried that we’d get that “look” from the serious folk who wanted to appreciate their jazz without kids present. Instead, the kids were very well-behaved (although my 6-year-old wanted to know why there weren’t any “words” with the music), and he couple immediately in front of us turned around promptly at the end of the show and complimented the kids on how well they did, and how impressed they were there to listen. Whew - dodged a bullet!
If you’ve ever wondered if this type of concert and venue would be appropriate for your kids, I encourage you to try it out - after all, even if you do have to leave, it’s not as if you’re throwing away a $75 ticket. And it exposes them to music they won’t hear a lot of otherwise, unless you’re playing it at home. Check it out!
