New Plan Presented For Downtown Evanston
November 9th, 2007 by JakeCity officials and a group of private consultant firms presented plans for the future of downtown Evanston at a packed meeting on Tuesday.
More than 100 residents were on hand to hear the details of the plan from Lakota Group and Duncan Associates. The plan lays out the future of development in downtown.
According to the plan, the city would be divided into three different zones: a central zone that would be set aside for major condo projects such as the proposed tower at Fountain Square, a zone around Davis Street that would be set aside to preserve the original architecture and businesses in the area, and a transitional zone between downtown and the city’s residential areas.
The Fountain Square tower continued to draw fire from local residents. The proposed building would have a total of 49 stories, but could be reduced to 42 stories under the new guidelines. Residents fear that development of the tower will continue despite concerns from neighborhood groups over congestion and parking.
Development of Evanston Illinois Condominiums in downtown is under a moratorium as city officials and local residents work out a viable plan for the area.
