Northfield Debates Installing Cameras To Catch Bad Drivers
September 14th, 2006 by adminThe city of Chicago has installed cameras throughout many intersections in the giant city. So far, they have caught tons of cars daily and have been able to ticket just about every one of them. While Northfield’s population could never dream of coming close to that of Chicago’s, especially the driver population, they figure that installing these sneaky cameras may benefit them just as equally. If so, Northfield will be the second town in all of Illinois to install the cameras to catch drivers running red lights. Northfield’s population is approximately 5,400 and Willow Road, the highway that runs through Northfield carries over 40,000 cars on a daily basis. There are always several accidents in the town, one for every four residents. That’s an awful amount of accidents. Therefore, Northfield officials would like to do something to fix the problem. But what is the problem? Well, the problem seems to be cars running red lights on Willow Road and Happ Road. If cameras are installed, then more people would think twice about running the red lights and if they continue to do so, then they would not be very happy to find the ticket in their mail a few days later. Northfield is not the only current town looking in to install cameras, and they can’t put up the cameras until the state has worked out protocols on attaching them to its lights. The Village Board will vote on the contract for the cameras with Redflex Traffic Systems at an October 17 meeting at Village Hall, 361 Happ Road. I hope nobody runs any lights to get there!
