Opponents Voice Concern Over Proposed Evanston High-rise
November 2nd, 2007 by JakeThe proposed development of a 49-story condominium tower in the heart of downtown Evanston has caused many residents to cry foul.
Residents are up in arms over the closed-door discussions between the City Council and developers earlier this year. The Attorney General ruled that the council violated the Illinois Open Meeting Act.
A decision this week by Attorney General Lisa Madigan to uphold her ruling against the Evanston City Council has only served to deepen concerns by residents that the council has already made an agreement with developers.
The city has not released any details of the meeting with the unnamed developers. Notes from such meetings are usually not released until six months after.
The city continues to consider the plan for the high-rise development despite a moratorium in place on new constructions around the downtown area.
The city is currently reviewing a new master plan for future downtown development that could transform the city over the next few years.
Evanston has already seen a jump in new developments. Condominium towers are dotting the downtown skyline, with more on the way. The area offers some of the best luxury Chicago Real Estate on the market.
