Skip Eskape – Go Brunswick Instead
September 15th, 2008 by KellyWell, this weekend was a bust, wasn’t it?
With the entire North Shore under a blanket of water this weekend, outdoor activities were seriously curtailed. Much to my dismay, the Glen’s Oktoberfest never really got off the ground, soccer and football games were cancelled, my running path was under water and the Park Center gym became an emergency shelter, making the track off-limits as well. (Note to the person who noticed I said, “Drat!” under my breath and lectured me on how at least I don’t live in Galveston - Yes, I’m fully aware of how lucky I am to be dry.)
So, what to do with three ants-in-the-pants kids? Time to hit the bowling alley. For kicks, we thought we’d drive out to Buffalo Grove and check out Eskape, just off McHenry Rd. and Lake-Cook Rd. Here’s my two-word review: SKIP IT. Nothing ticks me off more than arriving somewhere only to be told to go away - and in just about that tone, too. When we got there at 5 p.m., there were lanes open, and families bowling, but when we approached the suit behind the desk and asked if we could bowl, with not so much as a single ounce of empathy or apology, she simply said, “No. We have no open bowling until after 9:15 p.m.” OK, lady - did you notice we have three young kids with us? I don’t think that’s going to work. Here’s the thing - I would have understood if she had said, “You know, I’m really sorry. We’re setting up for league bowling right now, and don’t have anything available. Here’s a sheet with our open bowling times.” But nope - she was downright rude and dismissive.
And I will never go back. I’d sooner blow $100 at Pinstripes than $50 on that joint. So back to Deerfield we went and headed over to the Brunswick Zone. Now, it wasn’t the cheapest evening, either, at $60 for the five us of to bowl two games (actually, that’s not that bad, but they have coupons through their online club that make it MUCH cheaper!), but the lanes were clean, smoke-free and family-friendly. And….I bowled a turkey!
If you want to knock down a few pins, check it out!
