In 2006, smoking in Deerfield was banned at all places of employment, stores, restaurants, taverns and within 25 feet of the entrance to buildings. The villages efforts were recognized by the American Cancer Society and was presented with its Standing Community of Hope award to Mayor Steve Harris. Deerfields ordinance set the standard for other communities to follow.
Evanston: Affordable housing
The economic boom that swept Evanston six years ago, often referred to as the golden goose, was the topic of debate in ‘06. The threat of the goose going away caused great controversey in the decision to provide affordable housing.
Glencoe: Revamped garbage collection
Beginning in March 2007, a revamped garbage collection system will begin, after much controversey and debate. For residents who pay extra for garbage collection service, a second pick-up per week will begin. Over $130,000 is believed to be saved from staff and equipment replacement reductions through the new system, according to the village board.
Glenview: Initiatives to reduce traffic congestion is number one priority in 2007
The village board started of 2006 by studying speed humps, like those Chicago put in, as a way to calm traffic. As of November, more comprehensive measures were discussed, and beginning this year, in response to residents’ requests, strict enforcement will take place and other improvements will be made.
Highland Park & Highwood: Fort Sheridan and School finance
Both Highland Park and Highwood worked well to maintain educational opportunties for children of military children. Senate Bill 702 was signed in 2006 by the governor, that expects more than 200 housing units to be built at sites such as Fort Sheridan within the next few years. An estimated $472,000 in annual tax revenue would be generated for local schools and other taxing bodies because of the bill.
Kenilworth, Wilmette, Winnetka: Ash Borer
For the calendar year of 2007, Wilmette is budgeting $275,000 to fight the Emerald Ash Borer that has created a large battle and has quarantined the area.
Lake Bluff & Lake Forest: Lake Forest High School sees $54 mil upgrade, Lake Bluff battles over what to do with Harrison Conference Center
Pot-bellied pigs became an international spotlight for Lake Forest this year, after one resident moved her home and her pigs within the city limits.
