A History of Plastic Surgery To Show It Is Not Just About Vanity

Plastic surgery, also called cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery, is the medical practice of altering a person’s appearance through surgical methods.  Plastic surgery is believed to have been first used in 500 B.C.

The first plastic surgery was to reconstruct earlobes and noses using skin from other parts of the body.  It later waned in popularity and use.

In the 14th century and then again in the 18th century it regained popularity.  It was practiced mainly in Europe, a long way from Deerfield, Illinois.  The favorite procedure of the time was rhinoplasty (surgery on the nose).  

Anesthesia was introduced in the 1800s.  This helped plastic surgery become less risky and also made it more desirable to patients.
