The “business” of Accounting has been around since the 1400s, when Luca Pacioli first wrote a book about double-entry accounting, as he witnessed in Venice during the Italian Renaissance. In fact, this was one of the first guys to recommend never going to bed at night until debits equaled credits. His ledgers included assets, liabilities, capital, income and expense accounts. (Which has us thinking, where did business clientele go for lunch back then? An early version of Chili’s?)

We think it’s safe to say Accounting has been around long enough to be considered an established profession. And with good reason – it’s the maverick in small business that goes without the safety net an accountant can provide – a reliable, accurate description of one’s financial picture – the person you can count on to count your money, give sage financial advice and keep you out of trouble with the IRS.

Certified Public Accountants are licensed by Illinois after meeting certain requirements, including passing a certifying exam. You can turn to a CPA confidently to have tax returns prepared, represent you if necessary and run audits.
