A Little About Breast Augmentation or Breast Enlargement

Breast augmentation or breast enlargement is the most common plastic surgery in Evanston, Illinois and the United States as a whole.  There are various reasons women get breast augmentation.

Breast augmentation can be done to improve the look of the breasts or to create new breasts after a mastectomy.  A breast augmentation is done with breast implants.

There are two type of breast implants used in breast augmentation for patients in Evanston, Illinois.  Saline and silicone implants are commonly used.  There are other types but they are not as commonly used as saline and silicone.

Breast augmentation has been done since 1895.  In the beginning there were a variety of substances used as the implant.  Everything from glass balls to foam was used.

Common reasons women in Evanston, Illinois have for breast augmentation are reconstruction, to correct abnormalities and as part of sexual reassignment surgery.  These are the top reasons that are not strictly cosmetic.

Breast augmentation is a surgery that lasts from one to two hours for patients in Evanston, Illinois.  The procedure can vary from surgeon to surgeon as there are different ways to make the incisions and insert the implants.

The most common incisions include inframammary, periareolar, transaxillary, transumbilical and transabdominoplasty.

An inframammary incision involves the incision along the bottom of the breast at the fold.  It is the most common incision as scarring is less noticeable.

A periareolar incision is done around the areola.  These scars are also less visible.  This type of incision also makes placement of the implant easier.

A transaxillary incision is placed in the armpit.  This is a difficult incision, but leaves no visible scars.

A transumbilical incision is placed in the naval area.  This is another difficult incision, which is rarely done, but leaves no visible scars.

A transabdominoplasty incision is like a transumbilical incision.  The incision is made in the abdomen area and the implant is placed through tunneling up the abdomen.  However, this incision is most often used when the patient from Evanston, Illinois is also undergoing abdominoplasty.

Recovery from breast augmentation is usually around six weeks.  However, a person can often return to normal activities such as work in Evanston, Illinois by the end of the first week.  Tenderness, swelling and scarring are often present, though, for at least six weeks after the surgery.

Breast augmentation or breast enlargement is something that many women in Evanston, Illinois and other cities undergo.  Some for purely cosmetic reasons and others do it to just get back a normal appearance.  In some cases, breast augmentation is the only way to correct a deformity or bring back a feeling of self worth for a cancer survivor.
