A church and school were built and by 1885 there were 536 homes in the community. It continued a steady growth to the current day Glencoe, a small community lying just outside Chicago.
Glencoe has also been quite popular in works of fiction. It was the setting for the Tom Cruise film, Risky Business, in 1983. The 1986 film, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, had some scenes filmed in Glencoe, as well.
Scenes from Sixteen Candles and Flags of Our Fathers were also shot in Glencoe. Glencoe seems to be a hot spot for Hollywood.
Glencoe also has many points of interest. There is the Chicago Botanic Garden, Friends Park and Kalk Park for a taste of nature. For outdoor fun there is Glencoe Golf Club, Glencoe Park District, Glencoe Sailing Beach, Skokie Lagoons and Watts Ice Arena. There is also the Glencoe Public Beach and the Eklund History Center and Garden.
