Labeled the most wealthy and exclusive village located near Chicago, Kenilworth is home to just under 2,500 residents. In the April 2005 issue of American Demographics magazine, Kenilworth was listed as the 11th most affluent zip code in the nation. Of the communities situated along Lake Michigan, Kenilworth is the youngest and also the only one that was developed as a planned community. It's founder, Joseph Sears, named the village after a small town in England of the same name.
Kenilworth has managed to maintain a close knit, residential feel to its community. The streets are canopied with trees and lined with many houses that date back a hundred years and showcase some incredible architecture. George W. Maher, often associated with Frank Lloyd Wright, designed many of the homes in the village and kept to the Old World English theme. Maher is also responsible for the antique style street lamps, the fountain in the village square and graceful limestone pillars on Sheridan Road.
The village officials strive to preserve both the natural surroundings and the original homes in Kenilworth. To protect the residential areas of the village, it was decided that any commercial development should be limited and now is concentrated mostly along Green Bay Road and the railroad.
Kenilworth has several sites that add to the overall charm of the community. McKinley Park is located on the southern end of the village and provides a quiet place to relax, while The Ware Garden sits on the eastern side and invites residents to get out and get active. Kenilworth Beach is a public beach that residents enjoy during the warmer months of the year. The Kenilworth Train Station is classic in design and blends in well with the historic aspects of the village.
The Kenilworth Historical Society is an active part of the community and many residents belong to this organization. The Stuart Memorial Building houses the Society, which was founded in 1922. Members work to preserve the history of the village and educate people about Kenilworth's past. The historical Society encourages the residents of Kenilworth to take pride in the village and ensure that coming generations inherit a community that they can be proud of as well. They have played a vital part in shaping the future of the village by helping to appreciate and understand the past.
Another important focal point for residents of Kenilworth is the Assembly Hall. It was previously called the Kenilworth Club and is a community building located in the center of the village. Architect George Maher also designed this building and the summer of 2007 will be its 100th anniversary. The Assembly Hall is the hub of activity for the village and serves as a site for many events and activities of the Sears elementary school.
Residents of Kenilworth hold community events such as Memorial Day, Labor Day and Halloween festivities, Bingo Night, Lady's Softball and Bridge Club, Men's Bowling, and Boy and Girl Scout events at the Assembly Hall.
Just up Green Bay Road in neighboring Wilmette, The Noodle Cafe serves lunch or dinner to its customers from Kenilworth and beyond. From full meals to simple salads and pasta, this restaurant is a local favorite. The Cafe also has wines of the week and a separate children's menu.
Michael's on Green Bay Road is a more upscale restaurant that offers French food to its diners. Michael Lachowicz is the chef and his restaurant has been given a three star rating by the Chicago Tribune. Michael's features private and banquet dining rooms for special occasions and holidays, is non-smoking and wheelchair accessable.
For a delicious meal, there are several restaurants just outside of Kenilworth. The Wilmette Chuck Wagon on Central Avenue just a few minutes away grills its specialty of charred burger topped with gyro meat. It has been rated in the top ten burger places in the Chicago area and is family oriented. The Ridgeview Grill in nearby Wilmette serves its customers seafood, salads and chicken dishes.
Kenilworth residents can experience great entertainment at Wilmette Theatres or shop for flowers at the Sunshine Plant Shop or Morning Glory Limited Florist.
From the beautiful historic homes to the holiday gatherings at the Assembly Hall, it’s easy to see why Kenilworth residents love their community. It’s North Shore living at it’s best.
