Halloween On The North Shore

Ask any kid which is better – Halloween or Christmas or Hanukkah – and most will at least give that question a moment’s hesitation. With that in mind, NorthShoreInsider has all the angles covered.

Shopping:

There are a number of places to go to get your hands on the latest and greatest in costumes, beginning with Halloween Express on Skokie Rd. in Northbrook.

Haunted Houses:

(Note: Admission prices vary, usually between $4- $5)

In Evanston, the local haunted house will be at the Evanston Art Center, 2603 Sheridan Road, from 4 until 10 p.m., October 26 - 28.

Deerfield’s haunted house is located at Jewett Park and Community Center, from 7 until 9:30 p.m., October 26 - 27.

The Glen Town Center in Glenview will be hosting a FREE haunted house in storefront space on Navy Drive, just east of Von Maur department store. For more information, click here.

Northbrook’s haunted house, the “Tour of Terror,” located at the Ice Center at 1730 Pfingsten Rd., runs October 26 - 31, from 6 - 9 p.m. each evening. There are special children’s hours from 4 until 5 p.m.

Activities:

In Evanston, there’s a free evening of fun and games for kids ages 4 - 12. Spooky clowns, face painting, a magic show and refreshments are planned for the event. Join the fun at Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, 1655 Foster, at 6 p.m.

Skaters can get into the action, in costume, on October 30 be beginning at 6 p.m. It’s a free skate, open to the first 50 skaters, at Robert Crown Center’s studio rink. They’re located at 1710 Main St.

In Deerfield, residents can enjoy a corn roast on Friday, October 26, at the community haunted house at Jewett Park and Community Center. There’s a community party on Saturday the 27th, with indoor and outdoor activities, from 3 until 6 p.m. Wee ones can enjoy a “lights on” haunted house experience Saturday night from 6 - 7 p.m.

Winnetka has a variety of Halloween activities planned – beginning with a Haunted Hayride on Friday, October 26 , at dusk. This free event conjures up the scary sights and sounds of monsters and mummies. The haunted ride is not for the faint of heart. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should meet at Skokie Playfield.

There’s also a skating party for Winnetka youngsters at the Ice Arena, on Saturday, October 27 from 1:40-2:55 p.m. There’s free admission with a canned food item, and you’re encouraged to wear your costume. The event will include scary music, candy, and lots of kids.

In Glenview, everyone’s invited to the Halloween Spooktacular, scheduled for Friday, October 26 from 6 - 8:30 p.m. at the Park Center, 2400 Chestnut Avenue. The event, designed for kids 2 - 12 features a moonwalk and giant slide, “ghoulish” games, creepy crafts and mystifying entertainment. Hotdogs, nachos and beverages will be available for purchase. Costumes are optional. The fee is $6 per child. Parents must accompany their children.

Northbrook offers Halloween-themed public skating in conjunction with it’s haunted house, located at 1730 Pfingsten Rd. There are also a number of community events, including a Halloween Pumpkin Patch on Wednesday, October 24, at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. This event, which begins at 5:30 p.m., lets kids 3 - 10 decorate pumpkins, enjoy pizza, and get goodies. Admission is $30 per child/parent.

Highland Park boasts several activities for Halloween fans – a Scary Skate on October 28, from 6 - 7 p.m. at Centennial Arena, 3100 Trail Way. Admission is free if you are in costume, skate rental is $2. There’s also a Haunted Hayride, on October 19, from 7 - 9:30 p.m. at Sunset Woods Park, 1801 Sunset Rd. For a $3 admission charge, Tram rides begin at 7:00 p.m. from the football field at Sunset Woods Park and depart every 15 minutes until 9:30 p.m. This program is appropriate for ages 7 and up.
