Lake Bluff, Illinois
Located some thirty miles north of downtown Chicago, Lake Bluff is the farthest suburb among the nine on the North Shore. So named for the distinctive and beautiful natural bluffs surrounding the village, Lake Bluff is a secluded community set within a wooded backdrop.
Because of the extensive natural woodland encompassing the village, officials have sought to preserve the forested areas and have designed the more recent subdivisions such as Tangley Oaks and Armour Woods to complement, not conquer the existing trees and waterways. The largest older subdivision called the Terrace contributed to the biggest residential increase in the village during the 1970s, with the current population of Lake Bluff leveling off around 6,000.
There are many historic homes in Lake Bluff, and the village leaders formed a Historic Preservation Commission to aid in the protection of residential landmarks and architectural works of art. The majority of the village is residential but it has a downtown retail section as well as a commercial district and shopping center on the southwest fringe of the village.
