Private vs. Public Schools in Northbrook

There are two schools of thought on the advantages of Northbrook private and public schools, but regardless of where a person lives, the debate will rage. The law states that all children will be allowed to receive a government funded education, public schools, but also allows for the operation of private schools, those funded through tuition paid by the students.

Debate has gone on for years as to the benefits of private vs. public schools and many of those who attended, or have children attending, a private school in Northbrook contend the staff and curriculum are superior. Those with a public school background typically claim the only difference in the schools is the wealth of the families.

The largest fight in the private vs. public schools battle concerns money. When public schools first became popular outside those operated by churches, students attending private schools were charged tuition for attending. The taxes paid by their parents were being sent to the public schools in Northbrook, which did not, by law, charge tuition.

Parents of private school students began to clamor to have their taxes from the public school paid to the private school since their children were not benefiting from the taxes being paid. Public schools claimed that it is their choice to send their students to private schools and it is not fair to take money from the public schools just so they could send their children to another Northbrook school.

The debate then shifted to the quality of the education, with private schools claiming to have a superior curriculum, better teachers and was offering a better education. This argument did not sit well with the teachers in public schools and the issue of money found its way through the court system.

While many churches operate their own schools in Northbrook, they teach religious classes as part of the regular curriculum. Religious classes are not taught in public schools due to legal battles claiming the separation of church and state. Many parents of students in religion-based private schools claim it their right to have their children taught in the environment of their choice without having to pay taxes into a school system that cannot teach them their preferred family values.
