The Juliet Letters starring
Inspired by a news story about a professor who had been responding to letters addressed to Juliet Capulet, c/o the post office in Verona, Italy, Elvis Costello and The Brodsky Quartet composed the music and lyrics for this song cycle set to chamber music. A hauntingly beautiful work, the songs relate to love in one way or another, covering a wide range of human emotions from betrayal and disillusion to hopelessness and suicide. The lyrics reveal stories of both men and women, of varying ages and degrees of sanity, who have suffered some type of tragic disappointment or despair for which Juliet serves as a metaphor. The piece is melancholy, moody and sad, yet not without its moments of comic relief, and concludes with a song of condolence and hope. In a breathtaking performance, Devin and the Mercutio Quartet bring out the power and beauty inherent in this unusual work. You don’t want to miss them!
