It began with wallpaper, the rolls finally off the closet floor (after 12 years!) and beautifully installed. That single task initiated a flurry of activity that I came to refer to as “clearing.”
Friends and family were skeptical. Did I really have so much to “clear”? Yes, even this self-proclaimed minimalist had work to do! Clothing, shoes, and books—all the typical items—were examined and evaluated; full bags and boxes donated to local libraries and charitable organizations. Business and personal files were purged, my shredder working overtime. The laser printer that occupied almost half of my computer desk was relocated, providing a more open area in which to work. My beautifully refinished oak chair (with a writing arm) was moved from living room to office, making it a practical possession rather than something to be displayed.
Clearing then evolved into something more. Everywhere I turned I discovered items that had served their usefulness and were ready for new homes.
- A seldom-worn wristwatch was offered to a woman I met during my years in publishing—I knew she was a fan of “the retro.” Wearing the watch, she has told me, reminds her of our friendship and my dedication to promptness.
- Two small watercolor paintings (created by an artist I met 25 years ago) and a Yoga DVD were passed along to very appreciative friends.
- A small cut-glass turn-of-the-century shoe that belonged to my late maternal grandmother was wrapped and presented to a great-granddaughter, the first among her cousins to marry.
Changes in my physical surroundings brought calm, comfort, and an incredible sense of liberation. Each clearing activity became a stepping-stone to clarity on important life issues—one of the most important, a realization about time.
As I gave away things, I realized how much of my time I was giving away. While volunteering and being of assistance will always be an important part of my life, clearing allowed me to evaluate how often I donate my time simply because I can. This new awareness produced significant adjustments, and elevated my consciousness about time.
Clearing can be challenging. It is ultimately rewarding. With obstructions out of the way, we give ourselves time and space to focus on life’s most important endeavors, improve our connections with one another, and welcome the new.
What can I help you clear or think through?
