THINKING THINGS THROUGH
JUNE 2007
We’re Always Doing It!
What comes to mind when you hear the word “presentation”? Likely you think of a prepared speech to a work group, a club, or congregants at your house of worship. Yet even when we’re not in front of a group or on a stage, we’re presenting ourselves!
We’re presenting ourselves throughout the day as we . . .
- casually converse over coffee,
- introduce people at work or socially,
- leave a voice-mail message (and create an out-going message),
- participate in a meeting,
- explain a procedure,
- register a complaint,
- ask for information, or
- ask a friend for a favor
. . . and our actions affect others—those we know as well as strangers.
Successfully and compassionately presenting ourselves gives us the opportunity to:
- build or cement a relationship,
- increase our confidence,
- learn something new,
- improve our communication skills,
- be of service, and
- be a model for peaceful communication
. . . thus making life simpler, easier, and often more beautiful!
In future columns, I’ll offer practical and inspirational tips, ideas, and stories that grow from the simple idea that “we’re always presenting ourselves!”
